"Trans people are the backbone of hyperpop"

"Trans people are the backbone of hyperpop"

We're proud that our first listening party will be hosted by The Clare Project as part of our Trans Week of Visibility partnership.

On Tuesday 31 March, we will be listening to SOPHIE's landmark 2018 album, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides in its entirety.

We asked Newt from Sussex-based mobile record shop Keyring Records to explain the significance of the album to the community:

"Trans people are the backbone of hyperpop. It’s something that our community created, shaped and properly developed. This record is complex, agile, and it shape-shifts before your very eyes. SOPHIE, like many trans people, was an innovator.

"I think that our community feels a real sense of ownership over hyperpop, not just because of the trans people who have developed the sound, pushing the boundaries of both pop and electronic music, but because there’s something counter-cultural in taking something accessible and fun, and proverbially pulling it through a meat grinder of weird. Complete control over the strange.

"SOPHIE commands the record with wisdom and curiosity, and her music will always be a tentpole of what embracing your authenticity can do for your artistry."
